High Altitude Adventures & Wilderness Camp

Snowshoe Trekking and Nordic Skiing

The special location of Sunrise Mountain Village has something few vacation communities have to offer its owners and guests. Location, location, location- providing opportunities that will please everyone who loves the back country and the wilderness.  After 15 years in the making, Sunrise has taken its extensive back country trail system to the next level of service.  We have demonstrated our ability and dedication in providing our users with an outdoor adventure program where equipment and guidance are available throughout the winter.

The hours of maintaining the snowshoe, back country, and alpine ski on/ski off trails has been a labor of love over the last 20 years for Sports Center manager Greg Labella.  Improving signage, updating trail maps, purchasing new equipment, and expanding terrain has been a constant effort over the years for Greg.

Identifying our unique characteristics, a new name was created to go along with our expanding programs. “High Altitude Adventures”, offering back country skiing, snowshoe trekking and guide service at Sunrise Mountain Village .  Our location truly offers the user access to a trail system over 2500 feet in elevation and trails on 3 mountain peaks ( Vista Peak , Cherry Knoll, and Sunrise Mountain ).  The HAA guides are ready to get you better acquainted with the lay of the land in and around Sunrise .

This area offers the beginner Nordic skier access to gentle and moderate trails, while the advanced skier can set out to several breath-taking locations within Madden Basin.  Many trails have been established for snowshoe trekking; they are steep and narrow, and are sure to get the heart pumping.

The Sunrise Trail System is divided into several snowshoe trekking and backcountry skiing areas.  These areas vary in difficulty and proximity to the Sports Center.  The Cherry Knoll Trails have several loops for snowshoeing only, as these trails are narrow and steep.  Venture down to the Falls Brook for a true climbing experience complete with ropes.*

There are several village trails in and around Sunrise.  These trails are groomed and suitable for novice cross country skiers.  Trail loops allow the skier (or snowshoe trekker) to create a variety of routes of varying lengths and difficulty.  More advanced cross country skiers will enjoy the Madden Basin Trails located to the south of the village behind Vista Peak.  Some of these trail loops are groomed, while others are left in their natural state.  Good conditioning and skiing skills are necessary for this rugged terrain.

Vista Peak stands tall in Madden Basin at 2,450 feet. This peak can be accessed by the Vista Peak Trial (Tr. # 12) or by bushwhacking through the woods from anywhere on the Madden Basin Loop (Tr. # 8).  Conquering this peak gives you an awesome vista of the surrounding mountains, all over 3,000 feet.

The High Altitude Adventure Center has been set up outside the Sports Center adjacent to the pond, from which all trails originate.  Equipment distribution, trail information and a hot cup of coco in a warm cozy shelter are all available for your enjoyment.

We have enhanced this offering by setting up a winter shelter large enough for your group to get out of the cold, sit, relax and refuel on healthy snacks, soup, and a warm beverage.  The Wilderness Camp is located just one mile from the HAA center in Madden Basin .  Look for the red star on the trail map and make the trek to this truly unique oasis in the back country or have our guides show you the way.
